Our love for travel has been with us from a young age—Jesse spent 10 years living in Spain and New Zealand, experiencing new cultures from an early age, while Jo grew up taking adventurous trips that sparked her curiosity for the world. We met in 2014 at university, and after graduating, we set off on a three-month backpacking journey through Southeast Asia. WHERE IS MOSTAR? Mostar is a picturesque city located in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, nestled in the Herzegovina region along the Neretva River. Known for its stunning blend of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture, Mostar sits approximately 130 kilometers southwest of Sarajevo and is easily accessible by car, bus, or train. The city is famous for its iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and serves as a gateway to exploring the surrounding Herzegovinian countryside, including attractions like Blagaj and Kravica Waterfalls. Mostar’s strategic location and rich cultural history make it an essential stop on any trip through the Balkans. WHY SHOULD YOU VISIT MOSTAR? Mostar is a hidden gem in Europe, perfect for travellers seeking an authentic experience away from the usual tourist hotspots. Its relaxed atmosphere, rich culture, and friendly locals offer a glimpse into a side of Europe that often goes unnoticed. With a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, Mostar invites visitors to immerse themselves in Bosnia’s fascinating history and vibrant traditions. Whether you’re savouring delicious local cuisine, strolling through its charming streets, or simply soaking up the slower pace of life, Mostar is an ideal destination for those looking to explore something different and truly memorable. WHEN SHOULD YOU VISIT MOSTAR? The best time to visit Mostar is during the spring (April to June) or early autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild, and the crowds are smaller. These seasons are perfect for exploring the city’s historic streets, enjoying outdoor dining, and visiting nearby natural attractions in comfortable temperatures. Summer (July and August) is the most popular time to visit, offering sunny days and vibrant energy, but it can get quite hot, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C (95°F). For those who prefer fewer tourists and cooler weather, winter provides a peaceful and atmospheric experience, although some attractions may have limited access. We visited in July and would not recommend it, we found the heat unbearable at times and many of the popular locations seemed to be a lot busier than we expected. HOW LONG SHOULD YOU SPEND IN MOSTAR? Spending 1 to 2 days in Mostar is ideal for exploring the city and soaking in its unique charm. A full day is enough to see the highlights of Mostar and wander through the historic Old Town while giving you enough time to enjoy some of the traditional Bosnian cuisine. If you have more time, staying a second day allows you to explore the city at a slower pace, visit local museums, and take in the atmosphere. Additionally, with two days, you can use Mostar as a base for short trips to nearby attractions (which we will cover later in the blog). HOW TO GET TO MOSTAR Getting to Mostar is straightforward and accessible by various modes of transportation: 🛫 By Plane : The nearest major airport is Sarajevo International Airport, located about 130 kilometers away. From Sarajevo, you can take a train, bus, or drive to Mostar. Alternatively, Split Airport in Croatia is about 2.5 hours away by car, offering another option for international travelers. 🚆 By Train : Mostar is connected to Sarajevo by a scenic train route that takes approximately 2.5 hours. This journey is known for its breathtaking views of the Neretva River and the surrounding mountains. 🚍 By Bus : Regular bus services connect Mostar to Sarajevo, Dubrovnik, Split, and other nearby cities. The buses are affordable, comfortable, and a popular choice for travelers. 🚖 By Car: Driving to Mostar is a convenient way to explore the surrounding areas at your own pace. Well-maintained roads connect Mostar to Sarajevo (2 hours), Split (2.5 hours), and Dubrovnik (2.5 hours). 🧑🏼✈️ By Tour: Many guided tours from cities like Dubrovnik and Sarajevo include a day trip to Mostar, making it easy to visit without arranging your own transport. No matter how you arrive, the journey to Mostar is often part of the adventure, offering stunning landscapes along the way! TOP TIP! We would highly recommend downloading an E-Sim prior to arriving. This means you will have signal and data as soon as you arrive which is extremely useful. We would recommend purchasing an E-Sim through Airalo , they offer the best service at the cheapest prices. You can purchase an E-Sim here . VISIT THE ICONIC STARI MOST (OLD BRIDGE) The Stari Most (Old Bridge) is the heart of Mostar and one of the most iconic landmarks in the Balkans. Built in the 16th century by the Ottomans, the elegant stone arch spans the emerald waters of the Neretva River, symbolizing the city's historical connection between East and West. It's the perfect spot to take in panoramic views of Mostar’s old town, with its blend of Ottoman and Mediterranean architecture framed by the surrounding hills. For an unforgettable experience, watch the daring divers who leap from the bridge into the river below.. if you are feeling brave enough, you can also have a go yourself. It's safe to say, we didn't try this! EXPLORE THE OLD BAZAAR Wander through this charming cobbled street filled with traditional shops selling handcrafted goods, jewellery, and souvenirs. Here you will find plenty of bars and restaurants, so be sure to stop at one of them and enjoy a Turkish coffee or baklava.. (this we definitely did)! ENJOY PANORAMIC VIEWS OF MOSTAR The Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque without a doubt offers the best view point in Mostar. For a small fee you can climb the minaret for panoramic views of Mostar and the Neretva River. There is also a small and peaceful courtyard to explore and learn about its Ottoman heritage. VISIT MOSTARS SECRET BEACH Mejdan Beach is a hidden gem tucked away beneath the iconic Stari Most bridge, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling streets of Mostar. This secluded riverside spot is perfect for those looking to unwind and enjoy the soothing sounds of the Neretva River. The beach’s cool, clear waters provide a refreshing retreat on a hot day, making it an ideal spot for a swim. Surrounded by lush greenery and the breathtaking backdrop of the Old Bridge, Mejdan Beach feels like a peaceful oasis where you can relax and soak in the beauty of Mostar away from the crowds. VISIT THE CROOKED BRIDGE The Crooked Bridge (Kriva Ćuprija) is a charming and smaller version of the iconic Stari Most, nestled in a peaceful corner of Mostar. Built in the 16th century, this quaint stone bridge spans the Radobolja River and is thought to have been a prototype for the Old Bridge. Although a quick stop, it's definitely worth a quick visit that's for sure. WATCH THE SUNSET FROM AN ABANDONED SNIPER TOWER The Mostar Sniper Tower is a haunting reminder of the city’s tumultuous past during the Bosnian War. This abandoned, war-damaged building once served as a military stronghold, with its strategic location offering commanding views of the city. Today, it stands as a symbol of the conflict, with graffiti-covered walls and shattered windows telling a story of the devastation that the city endured. While it remains a somber site, it is a popular spot to watch the sunset. DAY TRIP TO LAKE JABLANICA On our journey from Sarajevo to Mostar, we made a perfect stop at Lake Jablanica, one of Bosnia’s most picturesque spots. We relaxed at "Exotic Beach ," a small, serene area offering sun loungers and a charming shack selling cold beers and water. We also came back here for the afternoon during one of our days in Mostar - it's easily accessible and only around a 1 hour drive from Mostar. The crystal-clear waters of the lake were perfect for a refreshing swim, surrounded by stunning mountain views. It was an ideal place to unwind, soak up the tranquility, and cool off before heading back to Mostar. DAY TRIP TO KRAVICA WATERFALLS A visit to the Kravica Waterfalls, located just a 45-minute drive from Mostar, is a must for nature lovers seeking a refreshing escape. These stunning cascades, surrounded by lush greenery, create a natural amphitheater perfect for swimming, picnicking, or simply relaxing by the water. You can explore the area via walking trails, swim freely within the waterfalls or even rent a kayak to get closer to the falls. For a bite to eat, enjoy local Bosnian cuisine at one of the nearby riverside restaurants, such as Restoran Mali Raj. Kravica is an ideal spot for a day trip, offering breathtaking scenery and a peaceful retreat from the city. Be warned, unfortunately, this is no secret and off the beaten path location. There are multiple day trips from neighbouring Croatia as well as other parts of Bosnia. We got here early, and there was already quite a long queue of people waiting to get in. We would definitely recommend visiting as early as possible and during the week if you can. We left around midday and the waterfalls were absolutely packed with tourists, leaving not much room for relaxing. Nonetheless, we would still definitely recommend visiting. DAY TRIP TO BALAJ TEKIJA Blagaj, a charming village near Mostar, is a fantastic day trip destination offering stunning natural beauty and cultural heritage. The highlight is the Blagaj Tekke (Dervish Monastery), a 16th-century Sufi monastery nestled beneath a towering cliff on the banks of the emerald-green Buna River. Here you can explore the monastery, marvel at the breathtaking scenery, and enjoy a boat ride to the river's spring. If you fancy a snack, head to one of the riverside restaurants, like Restoran Vrelo, where you can enjoy some freshly grilled trout and traditional Bosnian dishes while relaxing by the water. Blagaj offers a peaceful retreat perfect for a spot of lunch and a beer, we would definitely recommend visiting. You don't need the whole day to visit Blagaj and can easily pair it with a visit to our next spot, Kravica waterfalls. Mostar offers a range of accommodation options, catering to all types of travellers. You can find charming boutique hotels with views of the Old Bridge, cozy guesthouses tucked away in the cobblestone streets, and modern hostels for those on a budget. There are also traditional Bosnian-style lodges and riverside resorts offering a more tranquil experience. After weighing our choices, we opted for this perfectly centrally located Airbnb , ideal for exploring the heart of the city on foot. We would recommend this Airbnb because of its location and ease of access to the old town. There is also a street for parking directly behind. URBAN Urban, A Taste of Orient in Mostar has by the best views of the Old Bridge from their outside seated terrace. Urban offers a captivating fusion of Middle Eastern and Bosnian flavors, where aromatic spices and traditional recipes come together in a cozy, vibrant setting. They also do a lovely breakfast buffet for 2 which we would definitely recommend. We would also recommend getting her just before they open as we noticed a large queue forming (mostly full of people wanting a table on the terrace to get the perfect pictures of Mostar). RESTAURANT ŠADRVAN This is a popular spot known for its traditional Bosnian cuisine. Here they offer a variety of traditional Bosnian cuisine such as grilled meats, local specialties like burek, and cevapi all served in a charming setting with views of the Old Bridge. TIMA IRMA Tima Irma is a beloved family-run restaurant in Mostar, well known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and delicious homemade Bosnian cuisine. Located near the Old Bridge, the restaurant again specialises in traditional dishes all made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The rustic, yet cozy interior features wooden beams and charming décor, creating a comfortable environment that feels like dining at a local’s home. A trip to Ohrid, North Macedonia, is an unforgettable experience and a true hidden gem in Europe. With its rich history, stunning lake views, and charming mix of ancient churches, peaceful beaches, and quaint streets, Ohrid offers something for every traveller. It’s the perfect destination for those looking to escape the crowds and experience a slower, more relaxed pace of life, all while soaking in a unique cultural heritage. Whether you’re exploring the town’s UNESCO sites, enjoying local cuisine, or simply relaxing by the serene waters of Lake Ohrid, there’s a sense of tranquility here that’s hard to find elsewhere. Charon Canyon, a hidden gem in Kazakhstan's southern region, is a stunning and remote destination located near the town of Ili, about 200 kilometers (around 125 miles) east of Almaty. The canyon is part of the larger Ili River Valley and is known for its dramatic, otherworldly landscape, featuring towering cliffs, deep ravines, and vivid red and orange rock formations that resemble the surface of Mars. Its name is derived from the ancient Greek myth of Charon, the ferryman of the underworld, which adds an air of mystique to this already surreal location. The canyon is relatively untouched by mass tourism, offering a tranquil escape for those who venture off the beaten path. Accessible by a rugged, unpaved road, it is best visited during the warmer months from May to October, when the weather is more favorable for exploration. WHEN SHOULD I VISIT SKOPJE? The best time to visit Charon Canyon is during the late spring to early autumn months, from May to October, when the weather is warm and dry, making for the most comfortable hiking and exploration conditions. Summer, in particular, offers the clearest skies and pleasant temperatures, ideal for appreciating the canyon's striking colours and unique landscapes. If you're looking to avoid the crowds and experience the canyon in its most peaceful state, it's best to visit on weekdays. We experienced this amazing place with barely any tourists, we often felt like we had the whole canyon completely to ourselves. WHY VISIT SKOPJE? Charyn Canyon is the perfect stop on the way to Saty village, which serves as the gateway to the stunning Kolsay and Kaindy Lakes. If you're heading towards Saty, taking a detour to explore Charyn Canyon is an ideal way to break up the journey and experience some of Kazakhstan's most breathtaking natural beauty. The canyon lies roughly halfway between Almaty and Saty, making it a convenient and unforgettable stop. With a bit more time, you can venture off the beaten path even more and spend the night within the National Park. Staying overnight in Charyn Canyon allows you to fully immerse yourself in its natural beauty. The main place to stay is at The Eco Park . They have several accommodation options available, including cabins and yurts. These options offer a chance to enjoy the serene canyon environment, watch the sunset, and stargaze under a clear, dark sky. We opted for a visit on route to Saty and spent several hours here. Although there are accommodation options available, we felt as though stopping off on route gave us ample opportunity to explore. HOW DO I GET TO SKOPJE? Charon Canyon is located about 150 km southeast of Almaty, and the journey typically takes around 3 to 4 hours depending on road conditions and your mode of transport. Most people tend to visit Charyn Canyon on a day trip from Almaty, or on route to/from Saty village. Getting to Charyn Canyon from Almaty is relatively straightforward and can be done by car, bus, or on a guided tour. The entrance fee is 750 Tenge per person (approximately £2 GBP per person). Below are the main ways to reach the National Park. 1. CHECK OUT THE MAIN SQUARE The heart of the city, Macedonia Square, features grand statues, including the massive "Warrior on a Horse" (often referred to as Alexander the Great). Marvel at the serene architectural wonders of this city from this amazing square where you'll find traditional bars and restaurants. From this point you can head off into the rest of the city to carry on your exploration. 2. EXPLORE THE OLD BAZAAR Skopje's Old Bazaar truly is wonderful. Wander through one of the largest bazaars in the Balkans, filled with cobblestone streets, traditional shops, cafés, and mosques. It's a great place to soak in the city's Ottoman history and pick up some souvenir’s for some of the cheapest prices you'll find in the Balkans. 3. WALK ACROSS THE STONE BRIDGE You will more than likely stumble across this bridge without even planning to. This iconic bridge connects the old and new parts of Skopje and is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks, built during the Ottoman period, providing a perfect view over the city. 4. COUNT HOW MANY STATUES YOU CAN FIND Known for its controversial "Skopje 2014" urban renewal project, the city is filled with statues and fountains, creating an interesting mix of modern and historical vibes. Some say there are upwards of 300+ in the city centre.. we can't be sure though.. by the end of the day, we had lost count! 5. SIP COFFEE IN THE OLD STREETS Within the old streets of Skopje, join some of the locals and enjoy some coffee at a traditional coffee house. 6. TASTE SOME OF THE BEST BAKLAVA Return to the Old Bazaar or one of the city’s cozy patisseries to savour more baklava, paired with strong Turkish coffee for an authentic treat. We indulged in some of the nicest baklava we've ever tasted. Here you'll find plenty of different patisseries all selling their own different versions of the popular treat - take your pick, they are all delicious. 7. TAKE A DAY TRIP TO MATKA CANYON A day trip to Matka Canyon from Skopje is a must for nature lovers and adventure seekers looking to escape the city and immerse themselves in the region’s stunning landscapes. Just a 30-minute drive from the capital, Matka offers a breathtaking blend of rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and lush greenery. 8. SPEND THE NIGHT ON AN OLD BATTLE SHIP If you are looking for a more unique experience in Skopje, we would recommend checking out Hotel Senigallia . Based on a former boat, Hotel Senigallia is a unique, floating hotel built on an old Italian ship that has been transformed into a charming boutique hotel. Located in the heart of Skopje, just steps away from the Old Bazaar and the Vardar River 9. CLIMB SKOPJE FORTRESS FOR PANORAMIC VIEWS Overlooking the city, this historic fortress offers panoramic views of Skopje and the surrounding mountains. It dates back to the 6th century and is a symbol of the city. Not a difficult walk to do so we would definitely reccommend this to anyone. 10. VISIT TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF MACEDONIA Dive into the country’s rich history by exploring exhibits of ancient artifacts, coins, and statues. The Central American countries can often have their stereotypes. When we arrived in Guatemala city we were both excited, anxious and eager to get out and explore. It's difficult to put into words the feeling that visiting Guatemala gives you. Traveling through Guatemala brings an immense sense of fulfillment, as its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and the heartfelt connections with its people leave you feeling deeply enriched, inspired, and profoundly alive. Guatemala General Info WHERE IS GUATEMALA? Guatemala is located in Central America, nestled between Mexico to the north and west, Belize to the northeast, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. It's the third largest country in Central American and is home to 37 volcanoes. To its south lies the Pacific Ocean, while its eastern coast touches the Caribbean Sea, offering a mix of dramatic highlands, lush rainforests, and tropical beaches. Known as the "Land of Eternal Spring" for its pleasant climate, Guatemala occupies a prime spot in the region, serving as a bridge between North and South America. Its diverse geography and rich cultural heritage make it a captivating destination for travelers seeking adventure and discovery. HOW DO I GET TO GUATEMALA? Reaching Guatemala from the UK is relatively straightforward via plane, though it requires a connecting flight as there are no direct options. Most travellers depart from London, with Heathrow offering the widest range of connections. Popular routes include a layover in major hubs such as Madrid, Miami, or Houston, with airlines like Iberia, American Airlines, and United providing smooth onward flights to La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City. The total travel time typically ranges from 13 to 18 hours, depending on the layover duration and route. Once arriving in Guatemala City, we would recommend heading straight to Antigua via Uber, this is the fastest and easiest way to reach Antigua. WHEN TO VISIT GUATEMALA? The best time to visit Guatemala is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. This period offers consistently sunny days and clear skies, making it ideal for exploring the country’s diverse landscapes, from the highlands to the coast. It’s also the perfect time for hiking volcanoes , wandering through colonial cities like Antigua, or visiting ancient Mayan sites such as Tikal without the interruption of heavy rains. While the wet season, from May to October, brings daily afternoon showers, it’s also a time when the lush greenery is at its most vibrant, and fewer tourists mean quieter experiences. IS IT SAFE TO VISIT GUATEMALA? Guatemala is generally safe to visit, but like many travel destinations, it requires a bit of awareness and preparation. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing, can occur in crowded areas, so keeping valuables secure and staying vigilant is important. Stick to well-traveled areas, especially in cities like Antigua, Lake Atitlán, and Tikal, where tourism is well-established and safety measures are in place. Avoid traveling at night, particularly in rural or isolated regions, and use reputable transportation services. By staying informed, following local advice, and exercising common sense, most travellers experience Guatemala as a welcoming and unforgettable destination. During our three weeks traveling across Guatemala, we never encountered any situations that made us feel unsafe, and the same was true for every traveler we met along the way. The stories we heard from other travelers echoed our own experience: Guatemala, for all its stereotypes, proved to be a safe and enriching destination when approached with a bit of awareness and care. WHAT IS THE CURRENCY? The currency in Guatemala is the Guatemalan Quetzal (GTQ). Named after the vibrant national bird, the quetzal. Guatemala Travel Guide HOW LONG SHOULD I SPEND IN GUATEMALA? To truly experience the best of Guatemala, plan to spend at least two to three weeks exploring the country. This allows enough time to visit its diverse highlights, from the colonial charm of Antigua to the serene beauty of Lake Atitlán and the ancient wonders of Tikal’s Mayan ruins. With this timeframe, you can also hike an active volcano, explore vibrant markets like Chichicastenango, and relax on the black-sand beaches of the Pacific Coast. While shorter trips are possible, a couple of weeks will give you the chance to fully immerse yourself in the culture, history, and natural beauty of this enchanting country without feeling rushed. During our stay in Antigua Guatemala, we booked an Airbnb that turned out to be an absolute gem! Perfectly located on the corner of the main square. It allowed us to easily explore the cobblestone streets, charming cafes, and vibrant markets without needing transportation. The host, Roberto, was incredibly welcoming and attentive, providing us with local tips, restaurant recommendations, and even allowed us to leave our bags at the property when we did the overnight Acatenango hike. The property itself was cozy, beautifully decorated with a mix of traditional Guatemalan textiles and modern touches, and came at an unbeatable price. With a comfortable bed, and a lovely courtyard where we could sip coffee in the mornings, it made our Antigua experience even more special. You can book Roberto's place here. SPEND THE NIGHT SLEEPING ON AN ACTIVE VOLCANO The overnight hike to Volcano Acatenango remains one of our most unforgettable experiences in Guatemala and is truly a must-do for any adventurous traveler. The hike, while challenging, takes you through diverse landscapes—lush forests, high-altitude meadows, and rugged volcanic terrain—all leading to the base camp with breathtaking views of nearby active Volcán de Fuego. Watching Fuego erupt under a starlit sky, with bursts of glowing lava lighting up the night, was a surreal moment we’ll never forget. The early morning summit hike to catch the sunrise was equally magical, as we stood above the clouds with panoramic views of Guatemala’s volcanic peaks. Despite the physical effort and chilly temperatures, the camaraderie with fellow hikers and the awe-inspiring natural beauty made it more than worth it. If there’s one experience that captures the raw, majestic spirit of Guatemala, this is it. In order to do this, you would need to book a tour. There are many different tour companies that offer this experience, however from the research we did, the main two are Wicho & Charlie's or OX expeditions . We opted for Wicho & Charlie's and we couldn't recommend them enough. The whole experience from start to finish was professional, with English speaking tour guides, wholesome meals including hot coco and marshmallows to roast by the fire as well as the perfect base camp location for watching the nearby Volcano de Fuego erupt. Wicho & Charlie's are also one of the only companies to actually offer a proper cabin to sleep in. You can choose to stay in several different style accommodations at base camp ranging from tents to volcano side cabins. We opted for the cabin and it was so worth it. Wicho & Charlies are the most expensive company and do require booking in advance, however, you won't be disappointed with your choice and as this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, we definitely think it's worth the extra money. WHAT TO DO IN EL PAREDON El Paredon is a laid-back beach town on Guatemala’s Pacific coast, renowned for its black volcanic sand, vibrant sunsets, and world-class surfing. This hidden gem has a chilled, bohemian vibe, making it a perfect destination for travelers looking to unwind and connect with nature. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or a beginner, the consistent waves make it an ideal spot to hit the water. Beyond surfing, you can explore the mangroves on a paddleboarding or kayaking tour, relax in a beachfront hammock, or enjoy fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants. The town is dotted with eco-friendly accommodations and hostels, offering a perfect balance between rustic charm and comfort. El Paredón’s welcoming community and tranquil atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for those seeking a slower pace and coastal beauty in Guatemala. Surrounded by towering volcanoes and dotted with charming Mayan villages, the lake offers a mix of natural beauty and rich cultural experiences. Getting around the lake is an adventure in itself, as you’ll travel between villages by boat, soaking in stunning views with every ride. Each village has its own unique vibe, from the bohemian energy of San Marcos to the artisan markets of Santiago and the lively backpacker scene in San Pedro. Whether you’re kayaking on the shimmering waters, hiking trails with stunning panoramic views, or simply relaxing at a lakeside café, Lake Atitlán captivates with its serene yet vibrant atmosphere. The sunsets here are unforgettable, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, as the volcanoes cast dramatic silhouettes against the horizon. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, inviting you to immerse yourself in the beauty and culture of Guatemala. WHAT TO DO IN LAKE ATITLÁN Indian Nose Hike: The Indian Nose hike is a must-do for sunrise lovers, offering a rewarding 360-degree view of Lake Atitlán and the surrounding volcanoes as the first light of day illuminates the landscape. Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve: For the adventurous, the Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve, in San Marcos offers the thrill of jumping from a 15-meter platform into the crystal-clear waters below, set against the backdrop of lush greenery and the lake’s stunning beauty. Mirador Kaqasiiwaan : For panoramic views of the lake and its volcanic backdrop, hike up to Mirador Kaqasiiwaan in San Juan, where you'll be treated to breathtaking vistas and a unique perspective of the villages surrounding the water. Visit Santa Catarina Palopo: This charming village is famous for its colourful houses, many of which are painted in bold hues of blue, green, and purple. The local community continues to preserve their indigenous traditions, with residents often seen wearing traditional Mayan clothing. Santa Catarina Palopo is also known for its weaving traditions, and visitors can find beautiful handwoven textiles and crafts in local shops. Coffee Tasting: San Juan is known for its exceptional coffee, and a coffee tasting here offers the chance to sample some of the best local brews while learning about the region’s rich coffee-growing traditions. Chichicastenango Market: The vibrant Chichicastenango market is a must-visit for those looking to experience authentic Mayan culture, with its bustling stalls selling textiles, masks, pottery, and spices, all set in a colorful and energetic atmosphere. Paddleboard around the lake: The calm waters of Lake Atitlán are perfect for paddleboarding; rent equipment in any village and enjoy a peaceful day exploring the shoreline or gliding across the sparkling lake. Cooking Class: Immerse yourself in local culture with a hands-on Mayan cooking class, where you’ll learn to prepare traditional Guatemalan dishes using fresh, local ingredients and ancient techniques passed down through generations. Do some Yoga: Eagles nest is a popular viewpoint located in the village of San Juan La Laguna on Lake Atitlán. It offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the lake, surrounding volcanoes; the perfect place to enjoy some zen. WHERE TO STAY IN LAKE ATITLÁN Lake Atitlán offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit every type of traveler. In bustling Panajachel, you’ll find a variety of hotels, from budget-friendly hostels to mid-range boutique options with beautiful lake views. For a more tranquil and immersive experience, the villages surrounding the lake, like San Marcos and San Juan, offer eco-friendly lodges, charming guesthouses, and wellness retreats perfect for relaxation and outdoor activities. If you’re looking for a more luxurious stay, there are upscale resorts in towns like Santa Cruz and Santiago, where you can enjoy private villas, lakeside bungalows, and stunning views of the volcanoes. Whether you're seeking adventure, culture, or peace, Lake Atitlán’s accommodations cater to all preferences and budgets. LAKE VIEW LODGE, SAN MARCOS LA LAGUNA Lake View Lodge is hands down one of our favourite Airbnbs that we have ever stayed at. The Airbnb is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful and offers guests a tranquil and immersive experience in one of Guatemala’s most stunning locations. The lodge features cozy, comfortable rooms with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding volcanoes, providing the perfect backdrop for a relaxing retreat. There photos don't do this place justice, you definitely will not regret booking this place for your time in Lake Atitlan. We spent 4 nights here, followed by 3 nights in the hotel below. This was a perfect amount of time to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing stay at the airbnb. CASA DEL MUNDO HOTEL, JAIBALITO La Casa del Mundo is a unique and enchanting hotel nestled on the cliffs of Lake Atitlán, offering one of the most stunning views in all of Guatemala. This rustic yet luxurious retreat features a variety of charming rooms and private cabins, many with panoramic windows that overlook the lake and its surrounding volcanoes. The hotel’s serene location, accessible by boat or a steep path from the nearby village of Jaibalito, ensures an intimate, peaceful atmosphere perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation. You can unwind on the terraces, enjoy massages in the spa, dine on delicious locally-inspired meals at the restaurant, or enjoy the outdoor hot tub with breathtaking lake views. You can also swim straight off the hotel dock, or hire paddle boards or kayak from the reception. This truly is a special place to stay. You can book a stay at La Case Del Mundo here . WHAT TO DO IN SEMUC CHAMPEY When researching Semuc Champey in Guatemala you will most likely find the following information; Semuc Champey, located in the lush jungle of Lanquín, Guatemala, is a hidden paradise that should be on every adventurer’s bucket list. This natural wonder is known for its striking turquoise pools, formed by the Cahabón River as it flows over a limestone bridge. The crystal-clear water cascades into a series of tiered, stunning pools perfect for swimming and relaxing amidst the verdant landscape. However , our experience of Semuc Champey and Lanquín did not quite live up to the hype. Getting to Lanquín in order to visit the crystal pools of Semuc Champey is no joke, including a 12 hour drive into the jungle, on barely paved roads. After making the long journey to Semuc Champey, we have to say that, in our opinion , it just isn’t worth the effort. Getting there is a major undertaking, and once you finally arrive in Lanquín, there's not much to do beyond visiting the famous emerald pools and maybe tubing, provided the water levels are high enough—which they weren't during our visit, and we’ve heard that’s often the case. Lanquín itself feels quite uninspiring, with limited options for entertainment or decent accommodation. While the natural beauty of Semuc Champey is undeniable, the long travel time, lackluster surroundings, and underwhelming activities left us feeling that it didn’t live up to the hype. If you're short on time or looking for a more well-rounded experience, we’d suggest considering skipping this location in Guatemala and heading straight to Flores, which offers a more rewarding balance of adventure, culture, and accessibility. WHERE TO STAY IN SEMUC CHAMPEY When visiting Semuc Champey in Guatemala, three standout hostels in Lanquín cater to a variety of travel styles. Gringos Hostel, nestled in the hills, offers stunning views of the surrounding jungle and a laid-back vibe. Known for its eco-conscious approach and tranquil atmosphere, Gringos provides cozy dorms and private rooms, a relaxing common area, and a lovely pool. Its friendly staff can help arrange guided tours to Semuc Champey, making it a perfect base. For a social scene, Zephyr River Lodge is the go-to spot. With its infinity pool overlooking the mountains, a lively bar, and nightly events, Zephyr is ideal for those seeking fun and camaraderie. On the quieter side, Vista Verde Hostel offers a peaceful retreat with comfortable rooms, a pool, and breathtaking jungle views. This family-owned gem is a short walk from Lanquín’s center and provides budget-friendly meals and tours to Semuc Champey. WHAT TO DO IN FLORES The final stop on our Guatemala itinerary is Flores, a charming island town located in Lake Petén Itzá in northern Guatemala, is a picturesque destination that combines colonial charm with a laid-back, tropical atmosphere. Its cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and vibrant squares create a welcoming ambiance. Flores serves as a gateway to the ancient ruins of Tikal, one of the most significant Mayan archaeological sites in the world, making it a popular stop for travellers exploring the Petén region. Beyond its proximity to Tikal, Flores itself offers scenic lake views, opportunities for boat tours, and a variety of local restaurants and cafés. Flores is a peaceful and captivating base for discovering the rich history and natural beauty of Guatemala. TIKAL MAYAN RUINS Tikal is an ancient Mayan ruin complex nestled deep in the jungle, located just over an hour’s drive from Flores. The best way to experience the site is by booking a guided tour, which can be arranged through your accommodation. You can book a tour through your accommodation in Flores or on GetYourGuide. Tours typically start at various times in the morning, giving you the opportunity to witness the stunning sunrise while exploring the ruins. We would highly recommended to opt for the earliest tour if you want to get the most out of your experience in Tikal. You’ll avoid some of the crowds, giving you a more peaceful experience. As well as this, Tikal can get very hot and humid, especially since it’s located right in the jungle. You can opt to visit Tikal without a tour guide, however, we wouldn't recommend this. The guided tour covers most of the site, with ample time at the end for you to explore on your own if you wish to take more photos. There are some ruins that you are able to climb, we would definitely recommend this, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views above the jungle canopy. JORGE'S ROPE SWING Located by the shores of Lake Petén Itzá, opposite from Flores, Jorge's Rope Swing is based in the front garden of one of the locals. For a small fee, Jorge and his family will let you enjoy a beer and relax in hammocks, while soaring over the lake on homemade ropeswings before taking a plunge into the cool, refreshing lake below. It's a popular spot for both locals and travellers, offering a perfect mix of thrill and natural beauty. With stunning lake views and a laid-back vibe and multiple different swings at different heights, Jorge's Rope Swing is a must-try visit for those looking to add a bit of excitement to their visit to Flores. WHERE TO STAY IN FLORES Flores, Guatemala, offers a range of accommodation options to suit various budgets and preferences, making it an ideal base for exploring the nearby Tikal ruins and surrounding nature. For those seeking comfort and convenience, boutique hotels and mid-range lodges provide charming rooms with stunning views of Lake Petén Itzá and the surrounding jungle. For a more authentic experience, cozy guesthouses and hostels offer budget-friendly options with a laid-back, communal atmosphere. We booked to stay at Los Amigos Hostel . We absolutely loved it here, it offers a cool and laid-back atmosphere perfect for travellers seeking a social environment and budget-friendly accommodations. Situated just a short walk from the scenic lakeside, Los Amigos Hostel is known for its welcoming vibe. They have a very inviting bar and restaurant area, with plants, hammocks and even tortoises walking around. They also have their own in house travel guide who can book tickets, buses etc for you which is really helpful. Whether you're looking to meet new people, unwind after a day of exploring, or enjoy some delicious local food, this hostel offers an easygoing and affordable base to experience the charm of Flores. General Information WHERE IS ALBANIA? Albania is a small country located in Southeastern Europe, on the western edge of the Balkan Peninsula. It is bordered by Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the north, North Macedonia to the east, and Greece to the south. To the west, Albania has a coastline along the Adriatic Sea, while to the southwest, it faces the Ionian Sea. The country's strategic location places it at the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures, with a rich history influenced by both the Mediterranean and the Balkan region. Its proximity to Italy across the Adriatic further connects it to broader European and Mediterranean trade and cultural networks. HOW DO I GET TO ALBANIA? To travel from the UK to Albania, the most common and convenient option is to fly. Direct flights from major UK airports, such as London Heathrow, Gatwick, or Stansted, can take you to Albania's capital, Tirana, in about 3 to 3.5 hours. Airlines like Wizz Air, British Airways, and other budget carriers offer regular flights. Once you arrive in Tirana, you can easily travel around the country by bus, car, or domestic flights to explore Albania’s cities and scenic areas. Additionally, for those interested in more scenic routes, it's possible to drive through neighbouring countries like Greece, Montenegro or North Macedonia. The best time to visit Albania largely depends on what kind of experience you're seeking. The peak tourist season is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm, sunny, and ideal for enjoying the country’s beautiful beaches. Temperatures can reach 30°C or higher, making it perfect for outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, and sightseeing. However, this is also when popular destinations can get crowded. For a more relaxed experience, the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months are excellent choices, offering mild temperatures, fewer tourists, and lush landscapes. HOW TO GET AROUND ALBANIA? Getting around Albania is relatively easy, and there are several options to suit different types of travellers. We would definitely recommend option one. 1. Rent a Car Renting a vehicle is one of the most convenient ways to explore the country, especially for those wanting to visit remote towns, beaches, and national parks at their own pace. The road network is generally in good condition, particularly in major cities and along the coast, though some rural areas can have narrow or winding roads. We would recommend renting a car with EasyDrive Albania . The main office is in central Tirana and from our experience were very professional and helpful with a good level of english. 2. By Bus Buses are a popular and affordable means of transport, with regular routes connecting major cities like Tirana, Vlorë, and Shkodra, as well as smaller towns. However, bus schedules can be less reliable, especially in more remote areas. There are many buses and you do not need to book these in advance. IS IT SAFE TO VISIT ALBANIA? Albania is generally considered a safe destination to visit, with low levels of violent crime and a welcoming atmosphere for tourists. The country has seen a significant increase in tourism in recent years, and the Albanian government has made efforts to improve infrastructure and safety for visitors. While petty crime, such as pickpocketing, can occur in busy areas like markets or tourist hotspots, it is not a widespread concern. Overall, Albania is a safe and hospitable destination, with many visitors enjoying their time without any security issues. However, as with any trip, it's advisable to stay informed about any local developments or travel advisories. From our own personal experiences, we can confidently say that we did not feel unsafe at all in any of the places we visited in Albania. WHAT IS THE CURRENCY? The currency in Albania is the lek. This allows enough time to experience the country's diverse landscapes, historical sites, and coastal beauty at a leisurely pace. However, you could easily spend 10 - 14 days in this country and not get bored, so time permitting, we would definitely suggest staying just a little bit longer. SUGGESTED ITINERARY Tirana: 1/2 days Berat : 2/3 days Gjirokaster: 1 day Himarë: 5/6 days Shkoder: 1/2 days Tirana: Return back Our travel guide is based on our personal preferences. The Albanian Riviera is made up of several different towns, some charming and some.. not so charming. However, despite the array of towns along the Albanian Riviera, we found that Himarë, with its more laid-back and less touristy atmosphere, offered the perfect base for our stay, allowing us to explore the stunning coastline by car while enjoying a quieter, more authentic experience. We will cover the other towns where you can stay in our guide below. If you would prefer to spend a few nights in other locations then you could follow our alternative itinerary below. ALTERNATIVE ITINERARY Tirana: 1/2 days Berat : 2 days Gjirokaster: 1 day Saranda: 1 day Himarë: 2 days Dhermi : 1 day Shkoder: 1 days Tirana: Return back Starting an Albania road trip in Tirana, the country’s lively capital, is the perfect way to dive straight into the energy and spirit of the nation. As Albania’s largest city, Tirana offers a dynamic mix of history, culture, and modern flair, making it an exciting jumping-off point for your adventure. The city is compact enough to explore in a day or two, with plenty of must-see spots and great traditional cuisine. Here are some of the best things to see and do in Tirana depending on how much time you have: Skanderbeg Square: The heart of the city, surrounded by important landmarks like the National History Museum, the Skanderbeg monument and the Clock Tower. Bunk'Art 1 : A fascinating Cold War-era bunker turned museum, offering insights into Albania's communist past and the country’s history of isolation. Dajti Mountain National Park: Take a cable car up to the top for panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscape The Pyramid of Tirana: An iconic, though somewhat mysterious, structure originally built as a museum dedicated to the late dictator Enver Hoxha. Now, it's a popular spot for urban explorers. Blokku District: Once a restricted area for the communist elite, this vibrant neighborhood is now filled with trendy cafes, bars, and art galleries, perfect for experiencing Tirana's lively atmosphere. Tirana’s Grand Park: A peaceful retreat with lakes, walking paths, and the Artificial Lake, ideal for relaxing or a scenic afternoon stroll. Eat at Oda Restaurant: Offers an authentic taste of traditional Albanian cuisine, with rustic decor and a cozy atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to enjoy hearty dishes. We went here twice during our short time in Tirana and it was some of the best food we had in the whole of Albania. WHAT TO DO IN BERAT Berat, often referred to as the "City of a Thousand Windows," is one of Albania's most picturesque and historic destinations, offering a unique blend of Ottoman architecture, stunning landscapes, and rich culture. Located in central Albania, along the Osum River, Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its well-preserved historic district, where whitewashed houses with large, arched windows cascade down the slopes of a hill beneath the ancient Berat Castle. The town is a blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, with winding cobblestone streets, charming neighborhoods like Mangalem and Gorica, and a backdrop of the stunning Tomorr Mountain EXPLORE THE MANGALEM DISTRICT OF BERAT Stroll through Berat’s iconic Mangalem neighborhood, known for its white Ottoman-era houses with large windows that seem to cascade down the hillside. It’s the perfect place to soak in the town’s historic atmosphere. This area is often referred to as the "heart" of Berat. Mangalem is steeped in history, with many of its buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, creating a unique atmosphere that transports visitors back in time. There’s plenty to do in Mangalem, whether you’re interested in exploring the winding streets, admiring the traditional architecture, or soaking in the local culture. The district is home to several important landmarks, including the Lead Mosque and the Bachelor’s Mosque, both of which showcase the rich Ottoman influence in the area. You can also visit the Onufri Museum, located in the Saint Mary’s Church inside the Berat Castle, just a short walk up the hill. But Mangalem is not just about history, it’s also a vibrant area for food, drink, and entertainment. The neighbourhood is lined with traditional Albanian restaurants serving local specialties such as tava e kosit (lamb with yogurt) and byrek (savoury pastries), giving you a real taste of Berat’s culinary heritage. After a delicious meal, you can enjoy a drink at one of the many bars and cafes scattered throughout the district, offering both locals and visitors a lively atmosphere. VISIT BERAT CASTLE Visiting Berat Castle is a highlight of any trip to Berat, offering not only a fascinating glimpse into the town’s history but also some of the best panoramic views in Albania. The castle is located on a hilltop above the town, and it’s easily accessible by foot from the town centre, though the climb can be steep in places. If you prefer, you can also take a short drive up to the entrance. Walking: Start from Mangalem, the historic district, and head towards the castle hill. The walk is a bit uphill, but it's a scenic route with stunning views of the town and surrounding areas. It takes about 20-30 minutes to reach the castle gates on foot. Entrance Fee: t here is an entrance fee to access the castle, which typically costs around 300-500 Lekë (about £3-£5), depending on the season and any special events. Exploring the Castle: Once inside, you’ll have access to several key areas, including the Castle Walls, the Onufri Museum, and multiple churches, mosques, and watchtowers. Take your time exploring the various sections of the castle, which have been well-preserved and offer a sense of what life might have been like centuries ago. GO WINE TASTING Wine tasting in Berat, Albania, was one of the highlights of our road trip, and we couldn't have chosen a better spot than Cobo Winery . The family winery is located within a very picturesque setting, surrounded by rolling vineyards, created the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable afternoon. It was a peaceful and delightful way to spend the afternoon in one of Albania's most charming regions. As we arrived, we were greeted by a very welcoming member of the family guided us through the vineyard, explaining the history of the winery and the art of producing wine in this beautiful part of Albania. The wine tasting itself was exceptional, with a carefully curated selection of local wines that ranged from crisp whites to full-bodied reds. Paired with delicious homemade cheese, olives and freshly baked bread. It was an idyllic setting to relax, savor the wines, and immerse ourselves in the local culture. How to get to Saty WHERE TO STAY IN BERAT Known for its rustic charm and traditional ambiance, Hotel Tradita e Beratit is a standout choice for those looking to immerse themselves in local culture. The hotel’s design reflects Berat’s historical character, offering both comfort and authenticity. Guests can enjoy traditional Albanian cuisine in the hotel’s restaurant, including local specialties like the famous dish "Tradata e Berat". Its location provides easy access to the old town and offers a peaceful atmosphere. We spent two nights here and couldn't recommend it enough. For the price (57 EUR per night), the rooms were very spacious and traditionally decorated with air conditioning which was very needed. WHERE TO EAT IN BERAT Berat offers a variety of excellent dining options where you can savor local flavors and traditional Albanian dishes. Here are some of the best places to eat: Lily's Food Kitchen: A cozy and local eatery that serves a great mix of local and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Known for using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, it’s a favourite for both traditional meals and creative twists on Albanian cuisine. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the food presentation is top-notch. Eni Traditional Food: A well-loved spot in Berat, Eni Restaurant offers a fantastic mix of Albanian and Mediterranean dishes, all prepared with fresh ingredients. The laid-back atmosphere and excellent service make it a great choice for a relaxing meal, and the variety of local and regional dishes, including their fresh seafood, makes it a standout. Tradita e Beratit: Offering a variety of different local platers, Tradita e Beratit is a traditional and hearty hotel and restaurant offering dishes that embody the flavours of the Berat region. Gjirokastër, often referred to as the "City of Stone," is a UNESCO World Heritage site that captivates you with its well-preserved Ottoman architecture, charming cobbled streets, and stunning hillside views. Nestled in the south of Albania, this historical town feels like stepping back in time, with its iconic stone houses, ancient castles, and narrow alleys that weave through the old town. The centrepiece of Gjirokastër is the imposing Gjirokastër Castle, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley and river. As you explore, you'll also discover the town’s vibrant bazaars, local eateries serving traditional Albanian cuisine, such as borëk, as well as fascinating museums that showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage. Whether you're wandering through the old town’s maze-like streets or enjoying a peaceful moment in one of the town's lovely cafes, Gjirokastër provides a beautiful mix of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination on any Albanian itinerary. There are plenty of accommodation choices here from hostels to guest houses if you wanted to spend the night. We only stopped off here on route to Himarë from Berat and spent a few hours here, which we felt was ample time to explore and experience the highlights. WHAT TO DO IN HIMARË As mentioned in our suggested itinerary, we opted to base ourselves in Himarë for the week to explore and the amazing beaches, as well as visit the other nearby towns along the Albanian Riviera by car. However, you could spend 2 nights here, and split the rest of your time between places such as Ksamil, Sarandë or Vlorë. You will find some information about all of these places in the following section. Himarë is a picturesque little town nestled along the stunning Albanian Riviera, offering a serene escape with its crystal-clear waters, charming old town, and laid-back atmosphere. Surrounded by rugged cliffs and lush greenery, this coastal gem boasts some of the most beautiful and uncrowded beaches in Albania. The town itself is a delightful blend of history and modernity, with narrow cobblestone streets, traditional whitewashed houses, and the impressive Himarë Castle offering panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. There are plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes here for you to enjoy delicious local cuisine, such as seafood, or it's close enough to other little towns such a Dhermi or Qeparo, which means you have the option to venture off to other areas to explore the food they have to offer. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Himarë. At first, we did question whether or not 6 days was too much time here, however, by the end of the week we were wishing we could have stayed even longer. VISIT THE PRISTINE BEACHES OF THE ALBANIAN RIVIERA The Albanian Riviera boasts an abundance of breathtaking and unspoiled beaches, making it a paradise for every kind of traveler. The majority of these beaches are all easily accessible by car from Himarë, or any of the other towns along the riviera. There are too many beaches to list them all, however, here are a few of our favourite, and why; Gjiri i Aquarium (aquarium beach): The perfect hidden gem, renowned for its crystal-clear, turquoise waters and tranquil, cove-like setting that feels like a natural aquarium. We visited this stunning beach several times and it never felt too busy. This beach is easy to find by using google maps or mapsme, there is a short walk to the beach once you have parked your car. Gjipe Beach : Gjipe is a secluded gem surrounded by dramatic cliffs and a stunning canyon. This beach is slightly less accessible, as it requires a a 30-minute hike or boat to get to. However, its untouched beauty and turquoise waters make it a must-visit. Gjiri i Gramës (Grama Bay): This off the beaten path beach is only accessible only by boat or a challenging 2-4 hour hike. This remote bay is surrounded by rugged cliffs and features ancient inscriptions on the rocks. Perfect for a day of adventurers. Gjiri i Filikurit : Located a short drive from Himarë, this stunning beach (more on this below), is a secluded paradise accessible only by boat or a steep abseil/hike down. Not for the faint hearted, however, Gjiri i Filikurit offers unspoiled beauty and serene turquoise waters. When we visited we had the entire beach to ourselves for several hours, we would definitely recommend coming early and experiencing the true beauty of this beach for yourself. Jale Beach : A vibrant beach, with crystal clear waters - popular with younger crowds, offering lively beach bars, watersports, and nightlife. Llamani Beach : Located just off the side of the road, near Himarë, Llamani is a picturesque retreat known for its vibrant turquoise waters, pebbled shore, and tranquil ambiance surrounded by lush hills. Here you must pay for a sun bed, you'll also find bars and restaurants. Porto Palermo Bay : Home to a small beach near Ali Pasha Castle, this spot is great for history lovers and those seeking a quieter place to swim. EXPLORE THE ALBANIAN RIVIERA BY CAR The stretch of coastline along the Albanian Riviera is filled with charming towns, stunning beaches, and a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re looking for vibrant nightlife, secluded coves, or traditional villages, the Riviera has something for everyone. Here’s a guide to the towns along this breathtaking coastline and our opinions on whether you should explore them (We have not included Himarë in the below as we have already covered it in the above paragraphs): Dhërmi : Positives : Dhërmi is a stunning coastal village that effortlessly blends natural beauty with charm. Nestled between the Ionian Sea and rugged mountains, its crystal-clear waters and picturesque beaches, like Drymades Beach, make it a serene escape. The village’s cobblestone streets, traditional stone houses, and vibrant greenery create a peaceful, almost timeless atmosphere. Dhermi offers a perfect mix of relaxation and authentic Albanian charm. Visit the beautiful Zoe Hora hotel, located at the top of Dhërmi which feature a luxury infinity pool overlooking the town and the coastline beneath. Negatives: Overall, Dhërmi is a great town to visit or base yourself for a few days, here you'll find fewer bars and restaurants. Ksamil : Positives : Also known as "The Maldives of Europe", Ksamil boasts pristine beaches and turquoise waters lined with "Bali" style beach clubs and bars for visitors to enjoy the famous Albanian sunsets. Negatives : We had high hopes for Ksamil, but unfortunately, our experience was far from enjoyable, and we wouldn't recommend it to anyone based off our personal experience. The town felt overly touristy, dirty, and tacky, with little charm. The beaches were packed with tourists, leaving no space to relax or lie down. The shorelines were filled with people trying to capture the ideal shot, which only added to the overcrowded and chaotic vibe. To make matters worse, the noise and music from the beach bars were overwhelmingly loud, making it feel more like we were at a nightclub than a peaceful beach destination. Overall, Ksamil felt far from the idyllic getaway we had initially pictured, and we left after only an hour of being there. Sarandë : Positives : The gateway to the Albanian Riviera, Sarandë is a lively seaside town known for its vibrant nightlife and stunning views of Corfu. If you decide to spend a few nights here there is certainly not a lack of things to do and see, such as; explore Lekursi Castle for panoramic views of the town, visit the Butrint National Park as well as the famous Blue Eye Spring. Sarandë is perfect for those seeking a mix of tourist attractions, history, and lively city vibes. Negatives: We visited Sarandë for the day, however, we did not particular enjoy the atmosphere here. We found Sarandë to be much more built-up, touristy, and busy compared to Himarë, with crowded beaches and fewer off-the-beaten-path places to explore, making it feel less authentic and more commercialised. Qeparo : Positives : A picturesque village with two distinct parts: "Upper Qeparo", the old village perched on a hill and "Lower Qeparo", the newer, trendier coastal area. Here you can walk through the cobbled streets of Old Qeparo for stunning views and traditional stone houses and also relax at Qeparo Beach, a quiet alternative to the busier beaches along the Riviera. Negatives : While Qeparo, offers a picturesque and peaceful escape, there are a few potential downsides to consider when visiting or staying there, its limited infrastructure, steep terrain and slower pace may not be suitable for everyone. ABSEIL DOWN TO THE SECRET BEACH OF GJIRI I FILIKURIT Tucked away on the stunning Albanian Riviera, Gjiri i Filikurit is a hidden gem that promises tranquility and natural beauty. Accessible only by boat or a steep descend down to the pebblestone beach, this secluded bay offers a peaceful escape from the bustling crowds of more tourist-heavy destinations. Only a short drive from Himarë, the crystal-clear turquoise waters are perfect for a refreshing swim, while the surrounding cliffs and greenery create a serene, untouched atmosphere. With its remote location, Gjiri i Filikurit remains largely undisturbed, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a quiet day surrounded by nature. For adventurous travellers, this hidden bay is a must-visit, offering a true taste of Albania's unspoiled coastline. The bay is very easy to find, and you can find the location on Google maps or Mapsme. You will need to walk through the undergrowth towards the edge of the cliff in order to find the start of the descent (you will know when you are in the right spot as the is a white rope attached to the top of the cliff to aid your descent down to the beach). This beach was one of our favourite memories from our time in Albania. We arrived around 9am and had the entire beach to ourselves until around 11am. The bay started to fill up slightly more with one or two boats from around midday onwards. This is the perfect spot to pack a book and some sandwiches and spend the day, we couldn't recommend enough. ENJOY THE ALBANIAN SUNSETS The sunsets along the Albanian Riviera are nothing short of breathtaking, with Himarë Beach offering some of the most spectacular views. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into a vibrant canvas of orange, pink, and purple hues, reflecting off the tranquil waters of the Ionian Sea. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning scenery make it the perfect spot to relax and watch the day come to a beautiful end. There are plenty of beach bars here where you can grab a beer and play some card games as you enjoy the views. DRIVE ALONG THE LLOGARA PASS After your week spent exploring the Albanian Riviera, it's time to move onwards and away from the coastline. To do this, you will need to take the famous The Llogara Pass. The Llogara Pass offers one of the most stunning drives along the Albanian Riviera, taking you through winding roads that climb dramatically from the coast to the mountains. As you ascend, the landscape transforms, with panoramic views of the Ionian Sea unfolding below and lush, forested hills rising around you. The journey is nothing short of awe-inspiring, with each turn revealing a new breathtaking view in front of you. The pass itself, perched high above the coastline, provides an exhilarating experience, where the contrast between the vibrant blue sea and the green mountains creates a picture-perfect scene. From here, you will have the option to either carry on towards the last stop on our itinerary, Shkodër, or head back towards Tirana or onto the Albanian Alps. It takes approximately 4 hours to reach Shkodër from The Llogara Pass, or a 3 hour drive back to Tirana. There is another potential stop along the way which is the charming little town of Krujë, however, we didn't have time to visit here. WHAT TO DO IN SHKODËR Shkodër, located in the north of Albania, is one of the country’s oldest and most vibrant cities, rich in history and natural beauty. Situated near the stunning Lake Shkodra, the largest lake in the Balkans, the city offers spectacular views and opportunities for outdoor activities like boating and hiking. Shkodër is also home to important cultural landmarks such as the Rozafa Castle, which overlooks the town and provides a glimpse into the city’s ancient past, as well as the Historical Museum of Shkodër, which showcases the region’s diverse cultural heritage. The city is known for its lively atmosphere, with bustling markets, cafes, and restaurants serving delicious traditional Albanian dishes. As the final stop on the Albanian road trip, Shkodër will leave you with a blend of history, nature, and vibrant local life; definitely an essential stop for anyone looking to explore the lesser-known gems of Albania. ROZAFA CASTLE Visiting Rozafa Castle in Shkodër is a must for anyone exploring the city’s rich history and stunning views. Perched high on a hill overlooking the town and Lake Shkodra, the castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Steeped in legend and centuries of history, Rozafa Castle dates back to Illyrian times and has served as a strategic stronghold throughout various periods. As you wander through its ancient walls, you’ll uncover fascinating ruins, including remnants of old fortifications, towers, and a small museum that provides insight into the castle’s past. The combination of historical significance and scenic beauty makes Rozafa Castle a captivating stop during your visit to Shkodër. VISIT THE MESI STONE BRIDGE The Mesi Stone Bridge near Shkodër is a hidden gem that offers a peaceful escape into nature and history. Built in the 18th century, this well-preserved Ottoman bridge spans the Kir River and is a stunning example of traditional Albanian architecture. Surrounded by lush greenery and a serene landscape, the bridge creates a picturesque scene that’s perfect for a leisurely stroll or a photo opportunity or even a swim. We didn't bring our swim gear when visiting as we weren't aware of this, however, many of the locals and children were taking a dip under bridge in the crystal clear pools. The quiet ambiance and historical charm of the Mesi Stone Bridge make it an ideal spot to relax and take in the beauty of the region. LAKE SKADAR Lake Skadar, shared by Albania and Montenegro, is one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in the Balkans, offering a tranquil escape just outside Shkoder. The lake’s crystal-clear waters are surrounded by picturesque mountains, lush wetlands, and charming villages, making it a perfect destination to spend the day. Here you can enjoy boat tours to explore the lake’s many islands, observe diverse birdlife in the protected wetlands, or simply relax by the water's edge. Whether you're hiking, birdwatching, or enjoying a peaceful boat ride, Lake Skadar offers a serene and unforgettable experience amidst stunning natural beauty. WHERE TO STAY IN SHKODËR There are many different types of accommodation choices available in Shkodër, offering a unique experience, whether you're seeking a more traditional, nature-filled getaway or a luxurious, modern hotel stay. Some of the best places to stay are: Hotel Tradita: A charming, traditional hotel offering a cozy, rustic atmosphere and a perfect blend of comfort and local culture. Located near the city center, it’s ideal for exploring Shkodër's historic sites, including Rozafa Castle and the pedestrianized main square. The hotel also offers a fantastic restaurant serving traditional Albanian cuisine, adding to the authentic experience. Hotel Colosseo: A modern and upscale option, Hotel Colosseo offers comfortable rooms with contemporary amenities and great service. It's located a bit outside the city center, providing a quieter atmosphere with a luxurious feel. The hotel also features a restaurant, bar, and a large outdoor pool, making it a good choice for those seeking a more relaxed, resort-style stay. Shkodra Lake Resort: For those who prefer to be closer to nature, Shkodra Lake Resort is a great option. Situated near Lake Skadar, the resort offers a peaceful retreat with beautiful lake views. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or simply looking to unwind, El Paredon is a destination that should definitely not be missed. During our time in Guatemala, we fell head over heels for the quirky charm of El Paredon. The tiny coastal village exudes a “rough and ready” vibe, with its unpaved streets, rustic thatched-roof lodgings, and laid-back atmosphere. Yet, it’s exactly this unpolished authenticity that makes El Paredón so endearing. Life moves at its own pace here—locals greet you with warm smiles, surfboards line the beaches, and the sound of the waves creates a constant backdrop. WHEN SHOULD YOU VISIT EL PAREDON? The best time to visit El Paredon depends on what you're looking for. For ideal weather, plan your trip during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During this time, you’ll enjoy sunny skies and warm temperatures perfect for surfing, relaxing on the beach, or exploring the mangroves. If you’re a surfer, the wet season, from May to October, is also a great option as the waves are typically bigger and more consistent—though you should expect occasional heavy rain, especially in the afternoons. Additionally, visiting between September and December offers the chance to witness or participate in sea turtle conservation efforts, as it’s hatching season. No matter when you visit, El Paredon’s relaxed vibe and natural beauty make it an unforgettable destination year-round. HOW LONG SHOULD YOU SPEND IN EL PAREDON? While the length of your stay depends on your travel style, we believe that around three to four days is just right. This gives you enough time to soak up the town’s peaceful vibe, enjoy the stunning black-sand beaches, and catch some waves on the Pacific’s renowned surf breaks. A few days also allow for exploring the mangrove-lined estuaries by kayak or paddle board and indulging in the local seafood at beachside restaurants. We could have easily spent the week here, so we would definitely recommend giving yourself some extra time if you have the time. HOW TO GET TO EL PAREDON Getting to El Paredon from Antigua Guatemala is relatively straightforward and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Here are the most common options: Private Shuttle: The easiest and most convenient way is to book a private shuttle through a tour operator or your accommodation in Antigua. Shuttles typically offer door-to-door service, making the journey hassle-free. Shared Shuttle: For a budget-friendly option, shared shuttles are also available. These usually leave at set times and can be booked in advance at hostels or travel agencies in Antigua. Private Car: If you prefer more flexibility, renting a car is another option. From Antigua, take the road to Escuintla, then follow signs toward Sipacate. From Sipacate, El Paredon is just a short drive away. Be prepared for some unpaved roads near the village. Public Bus (“Chicken Bus”): For an adventurous and inexpensive experience, you can take local buses. From Antigua, head to Escuintla, then transfer to another bus toward Sipacate. From Sipacate, you may need a tuk-tuk or moto-taxi to reach El Paredon. We opted for a shared shuttle bus which we arranged through our accommodation. We were picked up in the main square and it was hassle free and very easy to do. El Paredon offers plenty of activities to easily fill a few unforgettable days. Whether it's a few days relaxing on the beach or by the pool, or a few days filled with adventurous activities, El Paredon has you covered. Some of the best things to do in El Paredon are: 🏄🏼♂️ Surf the waves: Catch consistent, world-class waves suitable for all skill levels, with lessons and board rentals available. 🌞 Enjoy the amazing sunsets: Unwind on the black volcanic sand beaches while soaking up the tranquil atmosphere. Enjoy the famous El Paredon sunrise and sunset which you can witness from the exact same spot on the beach. 🛶 Boat tours of the nearby mangroves: Paddle board or kayak through the mangroves to explore diverse wildlife, including exotic birds and sea turtles. You can easily book tours when you arrive in El Paredon. 🧘♀️ Yoga: Join yoga sessions on the beach to rejuvenate your body and mind. 🦐 Local Seafood: Take a Guatemalan cooking class or indulge in fresh seafood at local restaurants. We would highly recommend heading to Cocori Lodge and trying one of their shrimp burgers. El Paredon offers a variety of accommodation options that cater to surfers, beach lovers, and travellers seeking a relaxed, off-the-beaten-path experience. You’ll find a mix of beachfront hostels, boutique hotels, eco-lodges, and charming guesthouses, many of which embrace the natural beauty of the area with eco-friendly practices. Whether you're staying in a cozy hammock at a surf camp, enjoying the comfort of a boutique hotel with a pool, or opting for a more luxurious beachfront villa, El Paredón offers something for every type of traveller. Many accommodations in the area also offer easy access to the surf breaks, making it a popular choice for those looking to catch some waves. The atmosphere is laid-back, with most properties offering a tranquil retreat close to the beach, perfect for enjoying the stunning sunsets, swimming, or simply relaxing in the hammock with a cocktail in hand. SURF HOUSE EL PAREDON During our time in El Paredon we stayed at Surf House El Paredon and we could not recommend it enough. They have several different accommodation types, ranging from a regular hostel style dorm, to beach from bungalows suspended overlooking the sea. Just steps from the hotel, the wide, black-sand beach is ideal for relaxing, surfing, or taking in the stunning sunsets. The laid-back atmosphere makes it a perfect place to unwind, whether you're lounging under a palm tree, enjoying the view, or taking a refreshing dip in the warm ocean. WHERE TO VISIT AFTER EL PAREDON After El Paredon, we would highly recommend visiting Lake Atitlan.
